GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team claimed its longest winning streak in school history at 13 games in record setting fashion. The Tar Heels slugged 21 hits against North Carolina A&T and had eight consecutive hits in the seventh inning, scoring 10 runs (all school records) to rout the Lady Aggies 13-0 at Lavette Field. Freshman pitcher Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) won her eighth straight decision today, striking out 11 in six innings of shutout work. Cox moves to 14-6 while UNC improves to 23-13. NC A&T falls to 12-16 on the season.
The Tar Heels jumped ahead in the second inning as freshman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) led off the inning with a double and junior Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) homered to center field as UNC grabbed a 2-0 lead.
UNC extended its lead to three in the sixth inning as freshman Megan Welch (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) tripled down the right-field line with two outs to score senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) who earlier singled and stole second base.
The Tar Heels opened the game wide open in the seventh inning scoring a school record 10 runs and hitting safely in eight straight at-bats to gain a 13-0 advantage. Holden led off the inning with her second double of the afternoon and Price followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second. After a double steal, sophomore Jessica Young (Santa Ana, Calif.) drove in a run as UNC led 4-0. Senior Anna Tharrington (Rocky Mount, N.C.) had the fifth straight hit for the Heels with a single to left field to load the bases.
Junior Natashalyn Snipes (Durham, N.C.) continued the avalanche of hits with a single to the short stop to score another run for the Tar Heels. Sophomore pinch-hitter Ashley Allen (Houston, Texas) singled to center field for the sixth striaght hit to score two more runs for Carolina as the lead moved to seven. Welch struck again with a two-run double as Carolina now enjoyed a nine-run advantage, 9-0.
Senior Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) doubled to left-center field for the seventh straight hit to collect two more runs as the Heels led 11-0. Holden hit safely for the second time in the inning to collect the final two runs of the ballgame as Carolina downed the Lady Aggies 13-0.
Holden led the Tar Heels offensively going 5-for-5, with two doubles, one RBI and three runs scored. Price ended the day 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Tharrington finished 3-for-4. Welch, Tolleson and junior Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) each had two hits in the ballgame for UNC.
Carolina scored 13 runs, on 21 hits and no errors, while NC A&T scored no runs, on two hits and four errors.
North Carolina will host Appalachian State on Thursday, March 27 for a non-conference doubleheader. The games will be played at the UNC Softball Complex beginning at 4 p.m.
