Softball Upsets No. 22 Clemson Behind Stellar Performance From Jil Livengood

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Carolina softball earned an upset victory over No. 22 Clemson in the first round of the ACC Tournament marking its third ranked win of the season.

The Tar Heels punched first with a Michele Tarpey single that brought Emily LeGette home from second. Kendall Frost set the tone and responded with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the first inning.

In the second Frost put up another zero and it paid off in the top of the third when UNC scored twice on wild pitches to go up 3-0.

In the bottom half Clemson got two runs back but UNC didn't flinch, Sanaa Thompson launched her 14th home run of the season to go up 4-2.

Jil Livengood came in during the fourth with some traffic and navigated around it. She proceeded to dominate, going four shutout innings and only allowing one hit. The freshman stepped up and gave Carolina exactly what it needed.

UNC now looks ahead to the quarterfinals against Duke tomorrow at 5 p.m. on ACCN.
