CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Carolina softball fell to No. 12 Duke, 16-8, on Thursday to end its run in the ACC Tournament in the quarterfinal round.

The UNC bats struck first with a Michele Tarpey RBI single to go up 1-0, Raegan Jennings followed it up with an RBI single of her own to make it 2-0.

Duke responded with a four spot in the second inning to make it a 4-2 ball game. UNC didn't wait long to punch back, with Tarpey picking up another RBI single to cut the deficit to just one.

After Jil Livengood threw a scoreless third inning, the offense exploded, Sahara Wilson scored on a throwing error, then Lexie Roberts plated Sanaa Thompson with a single. Emily LeGette followed that up with a mammoth blast to centerfield which. Not to be outdone, Shelby Barbee sent the Tar Heels 100th home run of the season to dead center making it an 8-4 game.

Duke responded by scoring the next 12 runs to win the game, 16-8.

UNC's fate now lays in the hands of the selection committee which will announce the field of 64 for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
