Carolina Pushes Win Streak To 15 With Sweep Over Appalachian State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team continued its winning ways with a 5-0, 7-1 sweep over Appalachian State tonight at the UNC Softball Complex. The Tar Heels remain unbeaten at home (10-0) and out-slugged the Mountaineers 19-3. UNC improves to 25-13 overall, while ASU falls to 8-17.
Carolina took the lead in the first game scoring a run in the first inning. Senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) reached on a single and stole second and fellow senior Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) drove her in with a single to right field.
UNC scored a run in the fourth inning to gain a 2-0 advantage as junior Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) sacrificed Porter in who earlier reached on a double. The Tar Heels added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to an ASU error collecting two unearned runs.
Carolina scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning as junior Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) homered to center field for her first home run of the season.
Freshman pitcher Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) threw six innings, allowing just one hit and struck out 10. Cox won her ninth straight game for the Tar Heels and improves to 15-6 on the season.
Carolina scored five runs, on nine hits and one error, while Appalachian State had no runs, on one hit and two errors.
The Tar Heels scored in every inning in the nightcap to down the Mountaineers by six, 7-1. UNC was led by Porter who ended the game 2-for-3, with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) smacked her eighth home run of the season in the first inning with a runner on to give Carolina a lead which they never relinquished.
ASU scored an unearned run in the seventh inning as Lael Rorie doubled down the left field line to collect the Mountaineers only run of the doubleheader.
Freshman Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) pitched five innings, allowing two hits, no runs and struck out five to move to 10-3 on the season.
Carolina scored seven runs, on 10 hits and two errors, while ASU scored one run, on two hits and four errors.
Reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week Porter led the Heels going 4-for-6 on the day, with a home run and three RBIs. Tolleson also went 4-for-6 with two stolen bases, while freshman catcher Michelle Hoffmann (Huntington Beach, Calif.) went 2-for-3 in the second game.
North Carolina will host the Tar Heel Invitational Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30. The Tar Heels will face Hawaii and East Carolina on Saturday and Virginia on Sunday. The consolation and championship games for the tournament will be at 2 p.m. All games at the UNC Softball Complex are free admission.
