As a Senior (2003) • Started in 35 of 38 games played in (34 at catcher) • Hit .195 with three doubles, two home runs and six RBIs • Threw out 12 runners attempting to steal (34 percent) • Blasted a solo home run versus Long Island in the NCAA Regional in Fresno, Calif. on May 16 • Allowed only five passed balls this season • Named to the Tar Heel Invitational All-Tournament team after batting .500 for the tourney • Named Verizon Academic All-America second team for District III • Threw out the NCAA career stolen base leader, Nicole Barber from Georgia, twice on April 19 and 20.
As a Junior (2002) • Started in eight of the 23 games played in for the Tar Heels • Caught in 10 games, appeared as a designated player in two others and was used a pinch hitter in 12 games • Had one hit and one RBI as a pinch hitter • Tallied seven hits, two doubles, and eight RBI in 31 at bats • Her .368 on base percentage was fifth best on the team • Had a .387 slugging percentage • Hit her first career grand slam against Mercer in UNC’s 8-1 victory (3/24) • Went 2-for-3, with two RBI against Troy State in the second game (3/24).
2001: As a sophomore, appeared in seven games and started two at catcher • Named to the Dean’s List and ACC Honor Roll
2000: As a freshman, appeared in seven games • Made two appearances in the outfield and the others as a pinch runner or hitter
At Southern Nash High: As a senior, was named the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Female Athlete of the Year • Two-time Big Eight Conference Player of the Year in both softball and volleyball • Class valedictorian • Earned all-conference honors in softball and volleyball • Academic Athlete of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year at Southern Nash.
Personal • Full name is Anna Susan Tharrington • Born Oct. 8, 1981, in Rocky Mount, N.C. • The daughter of Donnie and Sandy Tharrington • Enjoys wakeboarding, snowboarding and eating Italian food • Has one sister, Amy Wells (23) • Her cousin, Scott Tharrington, played baseball at UNC and also wore jersey No. 3.
