ELON, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team exploded with a 13-1 win over Elon Thursday, improving to 18-12 for the year.
Kristen Brown belted a grand slam in the sixth inning to wrap up another run-ruled game for UNC, and Amy Nece added two more RBIs while Aquilla Mateen recorded three hits to help lead the Tar Heels.
UNC started off hot with a five-run inning in the second. Jillian Ferraro led off the inning with a double to right and was replaced by Stephanie Krider to run. Darby Rosen hit an infield single, and Erin Satterfield was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aquilla Mateen singled to the shortstop, which knocked Krider in, before Nece hit a two-run single up the middle to score Rosen and Satterfield. After a pitching change, Mateen scored on a Phoenix error while Nece advanced to third. Another Elon error brought Nece home and put UNC up 5-0 early.
In the third, three singles from Satterfield, Mateen and Brown loaded the bases for Carolina before Kelly drew a walk to force a run across the plate.
Elon took advantage of a similar situation in the bottom of the frame. Bases were loaded for the Phoenix on two singles and a walk, and Emily Roper was hit by a pitch to force home Elon's only run.
The Tar Heels tacked on another run in the fourth on Jordan Scarboro's solo shot to left center, her second of the year.
Leading 7-1 heading to the sixth, Carolina erupted once more with a six-run outing to clinch its second run-ruled game of the week. Scarboro led off the inning with a walk, and Ferraro and Tracy Chandless followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases before Scarboro ran home on a passed ball. Nece then drew a walk to load the bases once again before Brown cleared them with hit her ninth longball of the year, a grand slam out left center. Jenna Kelly followed with a single to right and scored UNC's final run as Lauren Fuller reached base on an error.
Lori Spingola (13-7) pitched three innings for the win, giving up three hits while striking out three in the win. Lauren Batten tossed the final three innings, giving up just one hit.
