UVA starter Melanie Mitchell and Spingola each were strong in the circle early. Mitchell fanned the side in the first frame, while Spingola struck out five and allowed just one hit after three innings.
Wheeler broke the scoreless tie with her team-leading eighth home run of the season in the third frame. The junior uncorked a solo shot over the center field fence to give UNC a 1-0 lead.
UNC tacked on another run in the fifth frame benefiting from a pair of Cavalier errors. Wheeler reached on a walk followed by a bunt single from Elliott and another Virginia error. Haleigh Dickey drew a bases loaded RBI walk to push UNC in front 2-0. Mitchell wriggled out of the inning with a 1-2-3 double play.
Virginia vaulted in front in the top of the sixth manufacturing three runs on three hits. The Cavaliers registered two quick bunt singles and later moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt. Stephanie Harris then battled Spingola to a eight-pitch at-bat that ended with a three-run home run over the left center field fence. The Cavaliers owned a 3-2 lead after five and half frames.
Foulks evened the score with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth. The freshman belted her second home run of the season with an impressive opposite field shot over the right center field fence.
After a walk issued to Brittany McKinney, Carolina established a pair of base runners. Wheeler advanced both runners to second and third on a deep fly ball to center field. Pinch-hitter Scarboro then ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to give UNC a 5-3 lead after six.
Spingola sat the Cavaliers down in order to seal the victory in the seventh.
Game 2
Buchholz (5-4) allowed just two runs over a complete-game effort. The freshman scattered seven hits in her first ACC complete-game victory.
UNC belted four home runs, tying the most the squad has hit in a game this season. Wheeler, Dickey, McKinney and Blake all posted home runs. Scarboro picked up where she left off adding two hits. Kelsey Green and Foulks each registered a hit.
The Cavaliers and Tar Heels traded runs in the first frame on leadoff home runs. Giannini Cipollini belted a solo shot over the center field fence for a 1-0 UVA lead. UNC's Wheeler followed with a mammoth home run over the right center field fence to knot the score at one.
Buchholz settled in after an eventful first frame. The Miami, Fla., native struck out five Cavalier batters through her first four innings of work.
Carolina blew open the score in the fourth frame manufacturing six runs on six hits. Scarboro led off the frame with a triple off the right field wall. Blake followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence. Foulks then singled and McKinney tattooed a two-run line drive home run over the center field fence.
Wheeler added a RBI sacrifice fly and Scarboro registered her second hit of the inning with a RBI single. Three pitching changes and six runs later, Carolina owned a 7-1 lead after four.
Virginia scratched out a run in the top of the fifth scoring on a wild pitch. Buchholz quickly ended any other threats with a groundout to end the frame as UNC led 7-2 over UVA.
Dickey belted a solo home run over the center field fence to stretch the UNC lead to 8-2 in the fifth. The Woodstock, Ga., crushed her eighth home run of the season and the fourth by a Tar Heel.
