Carolina Works Extra Innings To Earn Sweep Over Virginia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team slugged 14 hits in the opener and rallied for two runs in the 10th to earn its first two Atlantic Coast Conference wins this afternoon over Virginia, 10-2 (6) and 3-2 (10), at the UNC Softball Complex. The Tar Heels rallied in the 10th after giving up one run to score two runs on a wild pitch and a throwing error to gain their first conference sweep of the season. UNC improves to 30-16, 2-2 ACC, while UVA falls to 26-19, 1-3 ACC.
Carolina struck first in game with a run in the first inning. Senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) led off the inning with a triple to right field and senior Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) drove her in with a sacrifice fly as the Tar Heels led 1-0 after one inning of play.
The Tar Heels collected two more runs in the second inning on three hits. Junior Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led off with a single to left center and senior Anna Tharrington (Rocky Mount, N.C.) singled after a sacrifice to put runners on first and third. Tolleson was then intentionally walked and freshman Megan Welch (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) made UVA pay with a double to left center to give UNC a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) smashed her ninth home run of the season to lead off the third inning as UNC increased its lead to four. Tharrington added two more runs for the Heels in the third with a two-run homer to left field as UNC led by six.
UVA's Christina Grimm put the Cavaliers on the board with a two-run shot to left field as the Tar Heels led by four, 6-2. Porter responded for Carolina with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning as the lead was pushed back to five.
Holden smacked her third hit of the ballgame in the sixth inning driving in two Tar Heels as UNC led 9-2. Streete ended the game with an RBI single as the Heels downed the Cavaliers 10-2 in six innings.
Freshman Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) picked up her 17th win of the season, throwing six innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs and struck out five.
Carolina scored 10 runs, on 14 hits and no errors, while UVA scored two runs, on six hits and no errors.
In the nightcap, the Tar Heels rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the 10th inning scoring two runs on a wild pitch and an error to gain the 3-2 victory.
UNC scored first in the opening inning as Tolleson led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a wild pitch. The next five innings became a pitcher's dual between freshman Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) and UVA's Erin Horn.
Yin retired 10 straight for the Tar Heels holding the Cavaliers to just one hit in five innings of work. Horn retired 12 Tar Heels in a row before Streete singled in the bottom the fifth as the game headed to the sixth inning with UNC grasping a 1-0 lead.
The Cavaliers' Sara Larquier led off the seventh inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice. UVA's Tracy Sherman delivered with a single to center field to tie the game at one and advanced to second on the throw home. Sherman moved to third on a ground out to second base. UNC brought in game one pitcher Cox with runners on first and third with two outs.
UVA tried to run a double steal but the Tar Heels played it perfectly gunning the runner at third on a 2-4-5-2-6 combination. The Cavaliers put runners on first and second courtesy of two walks but Cox struck out Larquier to end the top of the eighth.
UVA led off the 10th inning with a double and scored on a single and an error by the Tar Heels as the Cavaliers led 2-1. After a pop-up bunt single to the pitcher, UVA sacrificed the runners over to have second and third with one out. Cox tallied a ground out to third and a strikeout to close the inning for Carolina.
Holden led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and Price singled to right field. Streete sacrificed the runners over to second and third with one out. The Cavalier pitcher threw a wild pitch and missed the throw to the plate as two runners scored as the Heels downed the Cavaliers 3-2.
Carolina scored three runs, on five hits and one error, while UVA scored two runs, on seven hits and one error.
Cox picked up the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing one unearned run, four hits and struck out five. She improves to 18-8 on the season.
Mike Price won the raffle for the 2003 Carolina Blue Thunderbird convertable raffle this afternoon in bwtween games. Carolina softball would like to thank all the personnel that made the raffle a success in fund raising to complete the complex. Thanks again!
UNC will travel to Elon for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15. The games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. All home games are free admission at the Complex.
