Swimmers And Divers Split With Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - As expected, the North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams split dual meets with Virginia Saturday at the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The ninth-ranked UNC women beat 12th-ranked Virginia in dual meet action for the first time since 1998 by whipping the Cavaliers 175-125. Carolina junior Katie Hathaway led the Tar Heels with three individual wins while senior Erika Acuff and freshman Jessi Perruquet each had two individual wins.
The Tar Heels broke a 25-meet dual meet winning streak for the Cavaliers.
Carolina's 14th-ranked men's team won only four of 13 events but was able to stay close to 11th-ranked Virginia before eventually falling 139.5-103.5. Sophomoer diver Stephen Krebs led the Tar Heels with two individual wins.
Hathaway won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.85), 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.30) and 200-yard individual medley (2:02.63) while also swimming the breaststroke leg on UNC's victorious 200-yard medley relay. Acuff swam legs on both the medley relay and the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay for UNC while also winning the 100-yard butterfly (55.52) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.49). Perruquet recorded two close wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.41) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.45) while also anchoring the winning 400 free relay. UNC's other win was by senior Summer Mack in the 100-yard backstroke (55.70).
Krebs swept both diving events for the Carolina men as he won the one-meter diving with 288.53 points and the three-meter diving with 341.93 points. Sophomore Sean Quinn swept to victory for the Tar Heels in 2:00.15 in the 200-yard breaststroke while the 400-yard medley relay team of Kert Johnson, Sean Quinn, Sebastien Moity and Michael Chenier won in 3:20.08.
Carolina's women and Virginia's men remained undefeated in ACC dual meet action. The Carolina women are now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. Virginia's women fell for the first time this season and they are now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The only loss suffered this year by UNC's women came in the season opener at #1-ranked and two-time defending NCAA champion Georgia.
The Virginia men improved their record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. UNC lost for the first time since the season opener at Georgia and is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
oth Carolina teams will return home next Saturday for their final home meets of the 2001 season. Carolina will play host to Maryland at 11 a.m. at Koury Natatorium. The Maryland women are ranked 16th nationally and lost for the first time this season on Saturday to Penn State at home. The Maryland men are unranked.
