General:
Three-time letterman...a valuable performer for the Tar Heels in the individual medley and the butterfly...ranks 10th all-time in UNC history in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.01…recorded the top time on the team in the 200 IM in the 2002-03 season and in the 200 fly in 2000-01 season…swam for Lancaster Aquatic Club as a prepster...competed in the 2002 U.S. National Championships…senior national qualifier in the 200 IM and 400 IM…finished second in the 400 IM at 2000 spring junior national championships.
2002-03:
Excelled at the 2003 ACC Championships, finaling in three events...placed seventh in the 200 IM at 1:50.21, finished eighth in the 400 IM at 3:59.11 and took sixth in the 200 fly at 1:49.67.
2001-02:
Had a solid ACC meet...placed 10th in the 400 IM, 12th in the 200 fly and 17th in the 200 IM.
Summer 2001:
At the Phillips 66 U.S.S. National Championships this past summer he finished 20th in the 200 I.M.
2000-2001:
Had a superb freshman season…emerged as the Tar Heels’ top performer in the 200 fly…at the 2001 ACC Championships, he finished sixth in the 200 fly (1:49.74), seventh in the 400 I.M. (3:54.54), and 14th in the 200 I.M. (1:50.54 prelim time), all well below his previous lifetime bests.
Prep:
Graduated on June 6, 2000 from Ephrata High School in Lancaster, Pa.…three time high school swimming All-America while a prepster…holds all but two of school’s swimming records.
Personal:
Given name is Paul Casey Coble…his nicknames include “Steamer, Jr.”, “The Hulk”, and “Space Monkey”…is the son of Gary and Peggy Coble…has one sister…born May 5, 1982 in Lancaster, Pa….says for his first date, he double-dated with former UNC swimmer Matt Baldwin, a fellow Lancaster native…athletes he most admires are former North Carolina swimmer Matt Baldwin, Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers, Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles and John Kruk of the Philadelphia Phillies…his biggest sports thrills were making the next step in swimming by earning a spot on the zone team at age 13, and receiving the honorary title of “Space Monkey” by his UNC teammates…geography major...career desire is professional geographists.
