General: Co-captain of the 2002-03 Tar Heel team just as she was of the 2001-02 squad...ranks seventh in UNC history in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.03, fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:03.48, fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:16.74 and 10th in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:03.07...talented three-time returning letter winner... swam this past summer in the U.S. Nationals...swam in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, competing in the 200-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley…made tremendous strides in both the breastroke and individual medley events as a freshman but was held back by illness problems as a sophomore...developed into a reliable backstroker her junior year…swam for the Tar Heel Aqua Racers and coach V.J. Meleski...U.S.S. All-America selection in the 100-meter backstroke and regional record holder in 100 back and 200 IM as a club swimmer...competed in the Marc Nostrum Tour throughout Europe three summers ago...is active at Carolina with Athletes Coming Together at a mentor for two years, Athletes in Action for two years, ACC Outreach for two years and the Sports Advisory Council for two years.
2001-02: Won the Hill Carrow Spirit Award for the women’s team in 2001-02...chosen for 2002 ACC Academic Honor Roll...solid swimmer at 2002 ACC Championships...swam on 200 MR and 400 MR which placed third...was seventh in both backstroke events and 10th in 200 IM.
Summer 2001: Competed in the Southern Sectional at Georgia where she was 14th in the 100 back, 15th in the 200 back and 23rd in the 100 breast. 2000-2001: Winner of the team’s Hill Carrow Spirit Award...persevered through a difficult campaign marred by illness problems...at the 2001 ACC Championships, she placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley, 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke.
1999-2000: Recipient of the Most Improved Swimmer Award for the women’s team…member of the Nike Cup champion 200 medley relay team…at the 2000 ACC Championships, she placed third in the 200 breast (2:16.74), third in the 200 IM (2:03.46), and tied for fourth in the 100 breast (1:03.48)...also swam on the 200-yard medley relay team which finished second at ACC’s…her performances in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes ranked her third all-time for UNC swimmers in both events, and her 200 IM clocking stood as the 10th best performance ever for a Tar Heel…2000 selection for the ACC Academic Honor Roll, compiling a 3.19 GPA her freshman year.
Prep: Graduated from Sanderson High School on June 5, 1999...swam there for four years, specializing in the 100 back, 100 fly and 200 IM...was team MVP as a junior and senior and regional MVP as a senior...state runnerup in 100 back as senior at NCHSAA meet...swam on state record setting relay team as senior...played two years of varsity tennis and one year of varsity soccer as well...three-year U.S. Swimming Scholastic All-America...two-year member of National Honor Society...four-year Student Council member, including being a student body officer as a senior...had her gall bladder removed in September of her senior year...was also voted "Class Clown" by her senior class.
Personal: Given named is Janna Lou Turner...nicknamed "JJ" and “T”...has two brothers and one sister...her brother, Jonah, was a three-year letterman on the UNC men's team (1998-2000) and her sister swam at N.C. State...daughter of Joe and Jean Turner...was born February 24, 1981 in Corinth, Miss....hobbies include ping pong, massive dance parties at the Treehouse, watching movies, going to Old Navy, tennis, watching 90210 reruns and imitating the Cookie Monster...biggest sports thrills have been winning two ACC championships three ACC titles...journalism major...seeking advertising career...athlete she most admires is Lance Armstrong and her brother Jonah.
