
UNC Softball Completes Two-Game Sweep Of UVa

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - North Carolina used a four-run third inning and a five-run sixth to defeat Virginia 11-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference softball action Sunday afternoon, April 2, at The Park in Charlottesville. With the loss, UVa falls to 15-27 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels improve to 31-13 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The two teams both scored a run in the first inning and then the Cavaliers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two innings. Virginia second-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./ La Costa Canyon) plated first-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) with a double in the first inning for the Cavaliers' first run of the game. In the second, an infield single by fourth-year second baseman Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) gave Virginia a 2-1 lead. Rojas was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored second-year designated player Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin), giving UVa a 3-1 lead.
UNC scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead for good, 5-3. The big hit of the inning was a two-out, two-run single by Rosie Gustavson. The 'Hoos narrowed the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a bases loaded single by fourth-year left fielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington) that drove in McCabe.
North Carolina stretched its lead to 10-4 with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the inning, the Tar Heels used four hits and a pair of Virginia errors to score the five runs. Beth Bates and Quinn Porter had RBI singles in the inning. The Tar Heels scored their 11th run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) hit her second homer in as many days and Dennis had a double that plated Peay to make the final score 11-6.
UNC's Michael Parrot earned the win with 5.2 innings of work in relief of starter Erin Joseph. Parrot allowed three runs on 11 hits. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took the loss. She allowed four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
For Virginia, Peay was 3 for 5, while Dennis had two doubles and two RBI in four at-bats. McCabe was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Krill added a pair of hits and a RBI in four plate appearances.
Michelle Semmes was 3 for 5 with three runs for UNC. Kelly Ramsey registered two hits, two runs and two RBI, while Bates drove in two runs with two hits.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 when travels to Liberty for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
