CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina (33-13, 2-0 ACC) picked up a pair of wins over UNC Charlotte (9-29, 0-6 C-USA) in softball Wednesday afternoon, holding the 49ers scoreless in both games of the doubleheader Wednesday afternooon. The Tar Heels won the first game, 8-0, in five innings and game two, 1-0.
North Carolina won the first game from the mound as well as the behind the plate. Pitcher Radara McHugh threw a no-hitter, allowing just one walk and posting five strikeouts. She improved to 15-4 on the season. Offensively, the Heels scored their first run in the first inning when Crystal Henderson came home on a single by Natalie Anter. They put three more runs in the second inning, when Michelle Semmes drove in Jen Klesaris, Rosie Gustavson and Quinn Porter on a single. The fourth inning brought the final four runs of the game. Gustavson started things, scoring on a single by Anter. The biggest hit, however, was when Kelly Ramsey smacked a three-run homer. The game ended after the fifth inning due to the eight-run-rule. Radara McHugh pitched a complete no hitter game and recorded five strikeouts.
North Carolina still won the second game, but with less fanfare. They score the only run of the game on a homer by Henderson in the fifth inning. Tar Heels pitcher Michael Parrot got the win to improve to 9-4. UNC Charlotte's Amy Morse took the loss in both games to fall to 6-22 on the season.
This weekend, UNC Charlotte travels to Saint Louis for a three-game series. Their next home game is Saturday, April 15, when they host DePaul for a doubleheader.
