Softball Hosts Elon Wednesday In Home Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team hosts Elon on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Tar Heels' 2023 home opener at Anderson Stadium. The midweek matchup kicks off a six-game homestand for the Tar Heels, which includes the annual ACC/B1G 10 Challenge this weekend from Feb. 17-19. Admission is free.
Wednesday's matchup vs. the Phoenix will be streamed on ACCNX and is available on Watch ESPN or the ESPN app.
SERIES BREAKDOWN VS. ELON
All-time: Carolina leads the series 37-11-1
At home: Carolina is 19-6 vs. Elon at Anderson Stadium
Trend: Elon has won four of the last five matchups
Last Time: Elon earned a 4-3 victory over the Tar Heels on Feb. 16, 2022, in at Elon. Kianna Jones led Carolina at the plate in the matchup, plating all three of the Tar Heels' runs off a three-run home run
CAROLINA OPENS 2023 IN PUERTO VALLARTA
The Tar Heels split their opening weekend in Mexico at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, posting a 2-2 record. Carolina earned back-to-back victories over California Baptist and BYU, before falling to No. 25 Ole Miss and No. 3 Oklahoma State.
Through four games, Destiny Middleton leads Carolina at the plate with a team-best .500 batting average, six hits, including a double and triple, two RBIs and a pair of walks. Kiersten Licea and Abby Settlemyre each have four hits, while Licea has the Tar Heels' sole home run.
In the circle, Bailey McCachren earned her first victory in a Carolina uniform against BYU, throwing a complete game shutout with four strikeouts. Lilli Backes earned a victory over Cal Baptist while tallying a team-high eight strikeouts in three appearances.
SCOUTING ELON
The Phoenix enter Wednesday's matchup with 1-3 record after its opening weekend home tournament. Senior Bella Devesa leads Elon offensively, hitting a team-best .545 with six hits, a pair of doubles and two RBIs. As a team, Elon went 4-of-4 in stolen base attempts.
Defensively, Elon committed six errors in its first four games combined, fielding .955 as a team.In the circle, Kaitlin King was the sole Phoenix pitcher with a victory, allowing just one run in 5.1 innings pitched over two appearances.
