Tar Heels Celebrate Senior Day With 7-0 Victory
April 3, 2022 | Men's Tennis
CARRBORO, N.C. – The No. 16 North Carolina men's tennis team earned a 7-0 Senior Day victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club. The win closed out the regular-season home schedule for the Tar Heels, now 13-6 overall and 8-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Yellow Jackets fell to 8-9 overall (2-5 ACC).
Prior to the match, the Tar Heels honored Mac Kiger and Benjamin Sigouin, both fifth-year players utilizing the extra year of eligibility that was granted due to the pandemic. "They've been a staple for us," said UNC coach Sam Paul. "Both All-Americans – that's really the only positive thing about COVID is we got to get them back. I could not be more proud of them both."
These "Super Seniors" lived up to their billing on Sunday, winning in singles and doubles against the Yellow Jackets.
In doubles, Kiger and Brian Cernoch, ranked fifth nationally, made quick work of Georgia Tech's seventh-ranked team of Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniels, winning 6-0 on court one. Next to finish were Sigouin and Peter Murphy, winning 6-2 on court three to secure the doubles point for the Tar Heels.
A lineup change put junior Anuj Watane and sophomore Peter Murphy into action on courts five and six. Murphy won in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1, to secure the first singles point. Kiger closed out Keshav Chopra at No. 3, 6-3 and 7-5, to put the Tar Heels within a singles win of clinching. Cernoch, ranked No. 28 nationally, wrapped up the victory for the Tar Heels with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over No. 30 Andres Martin.
The Tar Heels dominated tiebreakers en route to the victory, going 3-1 overall. Sigouin at No. 2 and and freshman Logan Zapp at No. 4 both won the second-set tiebreakers to secure their victories in straight sets, while Watane capped the sweep for the Tar Heels, winning 10-6 in a third-set tiebreak on court five.
The Tar Heels will visit two in-state rivals to round out the regular season, traveling to Winston-Salem on April 15th to take on Wake Forest and to Raleigh on April 17th to face NC State on April 17th.
