Softball Earns Victory over Bryant, Falls to No. 15 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The Carolina softball team split its last day of the Georgia Classic, earning a 2-0 victory over Bryant in the first game before falling to No. 15 Georgia, 8-1.
Freshman Carlie Myrtle threw a complete-game shutout against Bryant, allowing just two hits in the game, which both came in the seventh inning. She tallied 12 strikeouts in her first career victory, a season-high for any Carolina pitcher this season.
UNC: 2, Bryant: 0
Carolina's second matchup with Bryant proved to be a defensive battle. The Tar Heels had the sole hit through the first five and a half innings, which was a Taylor Greene single in the bottom of the second.
Freshman Alex Brown opened the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle, her third hit of the weekend. Junior Bri Stubbs followed that with a walk, her tenth of the season. After a double steal from Stubbs and Brown, junior Sara Jubas hit a two RBI single to left field that plated the only two runs of the game.
Despite Bryant recording two singles in the seventh, their first two hits of the day, Myrtle was able hold the Bulldogs scoreless, popping up two batters before the game ended with a lineout.
Carolina finished the weekend 2-0 over Bryant in the first two meetings between the programs.

The Bulldogs got the early lead to open the game, hitting a solo shot over the right field fence.
The Tar Heels tied it up in the top of the first. Skyler Brooks opened the inning with a single through the left side, stealing second and then advancing to third. Alex Brown then reached on an error by the Bulldog first baseman which resulted in Brooks scoring.
The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the bottom of the third, opening the inning with a walk which was driven home by an RBI double.
Things went south for Carolina in the third when Georgia plated five runs on four hits to take a 7-1 lead, which became 8-1 after the fourth.
Lilli Backes (2-4) took the loss in the circle for the Tar Heels.
