Softball Splits First Day Of The Spring Games Tournament

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Carolina softball team split their first two games of the Spring Games Tournament on Friday afternoon, earning a 2-1 victory over FAU before falling to No. 17 Missouri, 5-2.
Hannah George (3-0) set a new career-best of nine strikeouts against the Owls, allowing just three hits and one earned run in the complete game victory.
In just her second career start against the Tigers, freshman Lilli Backes (1-1) threw a complete game, striking out seven Missouri batters.
Freshman Annie Kate Dalton had her first two career hits against Missouri, while Kianna Jones finished the day with a team-best two RBIs.
GAME ONE – UNC: 2, FAU: 1
A pitcher's duel through the first three innings, Carolina was able to get on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. Kiannah Pierce and Sara Jubas had back-to-back singles in the inning, followed by a Taylor Greene walk. Jubas was able to score off a wild pitch.
The Tar Heels held onto the one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth. With one out, the Owls reached on an error who was then plated by an RBI single up the middle to tie it up at 1.
Bri Stubbs opened the top of the seventh inning with a double down the right field line. Dalton then grounded out to second base, advancing Stubbs to third. Stubbs scored on a passed ball to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 advantage.
George was able to hold FAU scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
GAME ONE – UNC: 2, No. 17 Missouri: 5
Backes opened the game strong against the Tigers, getting six outs with three strikeouts in the first six batters faced.
The Tigers got on the board first in the top of the third, hitting a solo home run to left center, going up 1-0. It remained a one-run game until the top of the fourth, when the Tigers hit their second home run of the game, a two-run shot to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Carolina offense picked up in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back Destiny Middleton and Aneshia Jordan hits. Jubas then reached on a fielder's choice.
Kianna Jones plated both Middleton and Jubas with an RBI single to center, cutting the lead to one run, 3-2.
Missouri was able to get two runs back in the top of sixth to go up 5-2. The Tigers able to hold the Tar Heels scoreless to take the second game of Carolina's doubleheader.
