UNC Hosts Elon, Carolina Classic at Anderson Stadium

CHAPEL HILL – Returning home from the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, North Carolina welcomes Elon for a midweek matchup before hosting the Carolina Classic Thursday through Sunday at Anderson Stadium.
The Tar Heels host Elon for a 4 p.m. contest Wednesday at Anderson Stadium. The Carolina Classic begins Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with a neutral site matchup between Florida Atlantic and George Washington. UNC faces George Washington at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday to kick off the Carolina Classic. Friday, the Tar Heels take on Fairfield at 6 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning with Florida Atlantic at 3:30 p.m. and concluding with Maryland at approximately 6 p.m. For more information, visit the Carolina Classic tournament schedule page. Stiff Competition at Mary Nutter
After a nearly 18-hour travel day, the Tar Heels arrived in Cathedral City, California. The Tar Heels battled back with late runs against No. 20 Oklahoma State but were unable to complete the comeback. In a rain-shortened five-inning game, North Carolina dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 16 Kentucky just as the momentum was starting to turn. The Tar Heels bounced back with a 7-3 win over Utah that featured three RBI from Hannah George and two from Abby Settlemyre. Despite leading early, the Tar Heels fell to a quality New Mexico State team who posted five runs in the sixth inning to wrap up Friday's competition. UNC scored in the first inning and led through five against Long Beach State, but the Tar Heels fell to the 49ers, 8-4 to conclude the tournament.
» Hannah George picked up her first win against Utah in 4.1 innings with a season high of five strikeouts.
» Abby Settlemyre led Carolina's offense, batting .643 with nine hits throughout the weekend. Settlemyre's average was the second-best among the 18 teams at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The freshmen led the tournament field with nine hits and two triples. She slugged .857 with six RBI and 12 total bases.
Carolina Finishes 3-1 in Fourth Annual ACC/Big ten Challenge
Hosting their fourth annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Tar Heels wrapped up the weekend with a 3-1 performance at Anderson Stadium. North Carolina topped No. 17 Michigan twice for only the second and third times in program history. UNC split the weekend with Northwestern, falling to the Wildcats in the first meeting before a 5-0 shutout in the rematch. Brittany Pickett tossed each of the Tar Heels three wins with two complete games and one in relief. Offensively, Carolina hit .294 with five Tar Heels hitting over .300, including Kiani Ramsey and Destiny DeBerry who hit .500. Freshmen Abby Settlemyre and Kiersten Licea each recorded their first career home runs against Michigan. Settlemyre slugged a two-run homer in the fourth before Licea slugged Carolina's first grand slam since Ramsey's on April 6, 2018 in the fifth inning. Settlemyre also rounded the bases for triples in back-to-back games, recording a 1.111 slugging percentage during the tournament.
» Striking out a season high of seven batters, Brittany Pickett retired every leadoff batter en route to her second shutout of the season against Northwestern.
» Leah Murray extended her hitting streak to 11 games and upped her career stolen base total to 82.
» With two wins over No. 17 Michigan, the tar Heels have won three games over ranked teams. Since the inception of the USA TODAY/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll in 1995, UNC's three wins over ranked teams this season are its most ever in the month of February. The Tar Heels recorded two Feb. wins over ranked teams in 2002 and 2010.
