April 10, 2016 | Softball
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – Carolina softball took the lead in the second inning, but the Tar Heel offense drew quiet, as Boston College avoided a series sweep with a 5-2 victory in Sunday's finale. The win lifts BC to 20-15 (4-5 ACC), while UNC falls to 22-19 (7-8 ACC).
The Tar Heels were limited to just four hits in the game but drew five walks and two hit batters. Berlynne Delamora was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and an HBP, while Taylor Wike tripled and drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Elena Covert also had a run-scoring walk, and Destiny DeBerry and Kristen Brown recorded UNC's remaining two hits.
Lauren Fuller (2-2) started in the circle for UNC, but allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over the first 2.1 innings. Kendra Lynch tossed the remaining 3.2 innings and did not allow a hit but gave up a run on two walks with four strikeouts.
Allyson Frei started for BC, but left the circle after allowing two runs on one hit and four walks over the first 2.0 innings. Jessica Dreswick (9-5) earned the win with 5.0 shutout innings in relief, allowing just three hits and a walk.
Boston College got on the board in the bottom of the first from an RBI single by Annie Murphy. Jessie Daulton got the inning started with a single to left. Tatiana Cortez walked, and Murphy ripped a two-out single off Fuller's foot and up the middle to make it 1-0 Eagles.
Patience at the plate helped the Tar Heels take the lead in the top of the second. Lynch drew a leadoff walk, then Fuller bunted her to second. Jillian Ferraro worked a 13-pitch at bat for a walk, then Tracy Chandless loaded the bases with a hit by pitch. Covert and Wike followed with a pair of bases-loaded walks to overtake the lead without putting the ball in play, 2-1.
The Eagles snatched the lead back in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded single by Murphy, chasing Fuller from the circle. Chloe Sharabba then added an insurance run with a sac fly to right before Lynch closed out the inning.
Murphy drove in yet another run in the bottom of the fifth, making it 5-2 on a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Loren DiEmmanuele who had stolen second and third as a pinch runner.
Brown singled with two outs in the seventh, extending her reached base streak to 44 games and keeping the game alive, and Delamora followed with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Lynch grounded out to end the inning and hand Boston College the 5-2 victory.
UNC returns home on Tuesday, April 12, to host East Carolina in a midweek nonconference game beginning at 6 p.m.
