CHAPEL HILL -- Kelli Wheeler and Megan Morrison each belted home runs combining for five RBI to lead North Carolina over Georgetown 14-0. Freshmen pitchers Lori Spingola, Sara Buchholz and Ashley Bone combined on a one-hit shutout to improve UNC to 7-4 on the season.
Spingola (6-3) earned the win tossing three shutout frames with five strikeouts. The freshman has now struck out 19 batters in her last eight innings pitched. Buchholz and Bone combined to toss two shutout innings to seal the win.
The 14 runs are the most UNC scored since manufacturing 16 against Boston College in April of last year. Wheeler led the attack with three RBI while Morrison, Tisha Mahon and Kelsey Green all notched two hits apiece. Haleigh Dickey and Brittany McKinney each added a hit and RBI. Logan Foulks posted a RBI sacrifice fly.
Carolina's offense got rolling early batting around to score eight runs in the top of the first on four hits. The big inning was highlighted by a two-out two RBI triple off the bat of Mahon and two RBI single from Green. Dickey added a RBI single and Foulks notched a RBI sacrifice fly as UNC led 8-0 after one frame.
Wheeler extended the UNC lead to 11-0 with a towering three-run home run in the third frame. The Marietta, Ga., native cranked her second home run of the year that cleared the trees in center field. The Tar Heels added one more on a bases loaded walked issued to Robinson.
Spingola was strong in the circle early and had plenty of run support. The freshman fanned five batters in her first three frames of work to pace UNC.
Carolina added two more runs in the fourth on a two-out two-run home run off the bat of Morrison. The two-run blast was Morrison's first career home run and pushed the UNC lead to 14-0 after four frames.
uchholz entered to pitch in the fourth and retired the only three batters she faced. Bone finished the shutout in the fifth tossing a solid fifth and final frame.
Carolina is back in action Saturday hosting FIU at approximately 3 p.m. and St. Joseph's at 5 p.m. both from Anderson Stadium.
