CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A pair of four-run innings propelled No.18 North Carolina to an 8-0, five inning run-rule contest over Boston College Sunday afternoon at Anderson Stadium. The Tar Heels captured their 10th straight and improve to 31-7 overall and 7-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Boston College falls to 9-18 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. Carolina will return to action on Wednesday when they host in-state foe East Carolina at 6 p.m.
The first five batters for the Tar Heels reached safely as Christine Knauer led off with an infield single before scoring on a perfectly placed double down the left field line by Breanna Brown. Whitney Allen hitting in the three-spot for the first time this season laced a single back up the middle to score Brown easily from second before Danielle Spaulding connected on her third home run in four games for a 4-0 lead.
Spaulding turned in another stellar performance in the circle as she went a predetermined three innings not allowing a hit, while striking out eight. Lisa Norris came on in the fourth and allowed just one hit over the final two frames for the Tar Heel win.
Carolina tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the third when Kelli Wheeler started things off with a one-out single before before moving to third when Kelsey Green doubled to left field. Knauer made it 5-0 with an RBI single to right center and then swiped her 20th base of the season to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
rown would make it 7-0 when she dropped a single into left field scoring Green from third and Knauer from second as Brown took second base on the throw, allowing Knauer to race home for another run. A single by Allen and an intentional walk to Spaulding loaded the bases for Brittany McKinney who drove a pitch to deep center field to easily score Brown from third and provide the final margin.
The win is the 10th straight for Carolina who will take on East Carolina in a single contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Anderson Stadium.
