BOSTON - No. 16 North Carolina (36-7-1, 10-1 ACC) got on the board early against Boston College on Sunday as they Tar Heels cruised to a 10-1, five-inning road victory. Amber Johnson got the win for the Tar Heels as she tossed five innings of one-run ball while striking out nine batters. Jennifer Jacobs paced the offense as she went 3 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored to go along with a game-high five RBIs. Carolina will continue its eight-game road trip on Wednesday when the Tar Heels travel to Charlotte for a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Tar Heels struck in the very first inning as leadoff hitter Breanna Brown drew a walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Danielle Spaulding delivered the game's opening run when she dropped a single into left field for the RBI. The Tar Heels were held scoreless in the second before putting three more runs on the board in the third. Emily Troup led off with her second home run in as many days when she took a ball to left center for the opposite field blast. Spaulding followed with a single to third base before Jennifer Jacobs cleared the bases with a bomb to right center, her eighth of the year, to give Carolina a 4-0 lead.
Cassie Palmer, Emily Troup, Danielle Spaulding and Jennifer Jacobs would all score in the top of the fourth as Boston College's pitcher was unable to keep the Tar Heels in check. Carolina sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning as seven consecutive reached base, four via walk. Boston College would cut into the lead in the bottom half of the fourth as the Eagles were able to push across a run to narrow the margin to 8-1.
Carolina was able to keep the bats going in the top of the fifth as Jacobs added to her RBI total again. Following a fielder's choice by Cassie Palmer, a single from Sam Ingersoll and a hit by pitch by Danielle Spaulding, Jacobs stepped to the plate to add to the Carolina lead and that is just what she did as she laced a single off the center field wall to score both Palmer and Ingersoll and provide the final margin of 10-1.
Johnson improves to 9-1 on the year with the win and in the process lowers her ERA to 1.33. The two through five hitters for the Tar Heels led the way on the day as the group of Palmer, Troup, Spaulding and Jacobs all crossed the plate twice on the day. Carolina will continue its eight-game road trip on Wednesday when the Heels travel to take on Charlotte in a twinbill set for 4 p.m.
