CLEARWATER, FLA. --- North Carolina extended its school-record winning streak to 17 games and wrapped up an undefeated spring break trip with a 9-1 run-rule victory over Boston University Tuesday afternoon at Eddie C. Moore Field. Amber Johnson pitched five innings to secure her tenth win of the year - against two losses - as the Tar Heels pounded out 12 hits in just five innings of play.
Erin Dudley opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second for UNC (24-8), blasting a ball to straightaway center that flew over the Terrier ceterfielder's head and bounced off the fence for a standup double. Anna Evans and Christine Knauer came around to score on the play, giving Dudley two RBI and the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead.
Anna Evans staked Carolina to a 3-0 lead in the third, plating Whitney Allen from first with an RBI double to right center. Joslin Higgins followed with an RBI double of her own to bring Evans home, and UNC took a four-run lead to the fourth.
After keeping the Terriers scoreless in the top half, North Carolina added two more doubles in the bottom of the fourth on the way to scoring three runs. Cassie Palmer led off with a two-base shot to right center, and two batters later, Jennifer Jacobs lined another ball into the gap, bringing Palmer and Breanna Brown across. The Tar Heels tacked on a third run in the frame to push the score to 7-0.
Boston (9-5) picked up an unearned run in the top of the fifth to break up Johnson's shutout, but Palmer and Brown hit back-to-back singles to start off the bottom half, setting things up for pinch-hitter Ciara Rimoldi, who lined a single up the middle in just her fourth at-bat of the season to pick up the first two RBI of her career - and send the game to an early run-rule conclusion.
Carolina now returns to Chapel Hill to open up Atlantic Coast Conference play with a weekend series against Virginia. First pitch for game one of a Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
