Tar Heels Sweep In Day One Of Georgia Tournament

ATHENS, Ga. - The University of North Carolina softball team earned two wins this afternoon at the Women's Athletic Complex over Bethune-Cookman, 10-2 (6), and Radford, 5-1 to extend its winning streak to five games. The Tar Heels tallied 21 hits in both games as they improve to 2-0 at the Georgia Invitational. Carolina advances to 33-16-1, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 39-15 and Radford moves to 11-28.
The Tar Heels jumped out in front over Bethune-Cookman 1-0 in the top of the first as freshman second baseman Megan Welch (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) smacked her fifth home run of the season to deep left field.
Welch led off the third inning with a double to right center. Senior left fielder Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) walked and freshman first baseman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) singled to left field to load the bases for the Tar Heels. Junior short stop Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Welch. Porter and Holden also scored on the play due to a misplay by the catcher and throwing error as UNC led 4-0.
ethune-Cookman cut the deficit to two scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Krista Schile led off the inning with a double and scored on a throwing error by UNC. The Wildcats scored their second run of the inning on a double by Jennifer East as the score moved to 4-2.
Carolina scored another unearned run in the fourth inning as Stewart crossed the plate on a ground out by Welch as the Heels led by three, 5-2. Holden smashed her 11th home run of the season and junior third baseman Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit her second homer of the season as UNC increased its advantage to five, 7-2.
The Tar Heels added three more runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Welch and Price as the Heels downed the Wildcats 10-2 in six innings of play.
Freshman pitcher Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) threw her 17th complete game of the season, scattering three hits, giving up two unearned runs and struck out nine. Cox advances to 21-8 on the season.
Welch led the Tar Heels offensively going 3-for-4, with a home run, double and three RBIs. Holden and Streete each went 2-for-4 with a home run, while Price and Tolleson ended 2-for-4 to pace the Heels.
Carolina scored 10 runs, on 13 hits and one error, while Bethune-Cookman scored two runs, on three hits and five errors.
In the second game of the Georgia Invitational, UNC scored two runs in the first inning as Holden hammered a fastball into the trees in right field with Tolleson on base as the Tar Heels led 2-0.
Radford sneaked a run across in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Tar Heel error as UNC's lead was cut to one. Carolina responded with three runs to take a 5-1 advantage after five innings of play.
Welch singled in junior right fielder Natashalyn Snipes (Durham, N.C.) who reached on an error to begin the inning. RU's Jen Bosley then walked the next three Tar Heels to push across the second run of the inning and UNC scored the final run on an error by the Highlander short stop.
Neither team managed a run over the next two innings as UNC held onto a 5-1 victory over the Highlanders.
UNC scored five runs, on eight hits and two errors, while Radford scored one run, on five hits and three errors.
Porter and Tolleson paced the Tar Heel bats with 2-for-4 performances. Holden ended 1-for-2 with her 12th home run and two walks.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Allen (Houston, Texas) picked up her first win of the season, pitching all seven innings, scattering five hits, one unearned run and struck out five.
Carolina will face No. 9/10 Georgia tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. to round out pool play for the Tar Heels.
