COLLEGE PARK, Md.- In an ACC/SASA doubleheader battle at the University of Maryland's North Softball Complex, the North Carolina Tar Heels (34-17-1, 6-2 ACC/SASA) downed the Terrapins (35-19, 1-5 ACC/SASA), 2-0 and 1-0. The Tar Heels gained advantages that they would not relinquish in both evenly played contests to pick up the pair of conference victories.
A pitcher's duel between two of the most accomplished hurlers in the ACC opened the doubleheader. Terrapin junior Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and UNC senior Radara McHugh (Tulsa, Okla.) were both solid, scattering seven and six hits respectively and battling out of jam after jam. In the end, McHugh picked up her 20th win of the season, striking out seven.
UNC was first on the scoreboard in the second inning, as Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) scampered home on a Terp fielding error. A bases-loaded walk to Tar Heel junior Sarah Young (Annandale, Va.) in the sixth brought home sophomore Lauren Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) for the final count.
The Terrapins threatened several times throughout the game, loading the bases in the second, fifth and seventh, but could not bring a run across. Bettker struck out two in defeat as her record moved to 13-5.
Carolina sophomore Michael Parrot captured the second game's 1-0 victory, striking out five. Terp senior Jenn Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) fanned a pair in the loss.
The Tar Heels took a third-inning lead in Game 2 when senior Michelle Semmes (Fayetville, N.C.) laced a RBI-double down the right field line that plated centerfielder Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.). Maryland's best chance to score came in the fourth when the Terps had two runners aboard and one out, but the threat was erased by a Tar Heel double play.
Maryland catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) went 3-for-6 (.500) on the day with a walk. Senior shortstop Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) reached base five times, with a single, three bases on balls and one hit by pitch, while Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) singled twice in Game 1.
For the Tar Heels, Semmes was 3-for-7 with a RBI to tie for North Carolina's career base hits lead at 233 and counting.
The Terrapins' weekend of SASA softball action continues tomorrow as Maryland squares off with East Carolina, winners of two at UMBC this afternoon. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. North Carolina is dormant until the ACC Softball Tournament in Raleigh, to be held May 11-13.
