Tar Heel Softball Now 4-0 In Weekend Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Tar Heel softball team earned two wins Saturday in the Ringor Winthrop Invitational Tournament, but came about those victories in very different ways. In the afternoon game, UNC's defense led the way in a 2-0 win over Cleveland State. In the night game, it was the offense that earned top billing in a 12-4 victory against St. Peter's.
Against Cleveland State, junior Michelle Semmes hit a solo home run in the first inning and sophomore Rosie Gustavson sacrificed Sarah Young home in the fifth for the Tar Heels - runs. Junior Radara McHugh pitched the win, giving up three hits while striking out nine. Junior Beth Olen was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Against St. Peter's, the Tar Heels opened strong with three solo home runs in the first inning and totaled five for the game. Senior Jen Klesaris, batting second, hit the game's first homer, then Semmes added her second of the day. Sophomore Kelly Ramsey had the third of the inning. Sophomore Natalie Anter added a two-run home run in the second and Klesaris hit a grand slam in the fifth. Freshman Michael Parrott earned the win, striking out 13.
Carolina, now 23-9, continues bracket play on Sunday.
