Tar Heel Softball Takes Second At Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team made a run to the championship game of the Ringor Winthrop Invitational Tournament on Sunday, but fell to Southern Mississippi in the title game. To reach the championship, the Tar Heels beat Akron 5-3 and East Carolina 5-2 on Sunday morning. The ECU win was Coach Donna Papa's 500th of her tenure at UNC.
Sophomore Natalie Anter, junior Michelle Semmes and senior Jen Klesaris were named to the all-tournament team in recognition of their outstanding play throughout the weekend. Against Southern Miss, Anter accounted for all the team's RBI with a two-run homer in the first inning. Semmes went 2-for-2 at the plate. In the day's first game, against Akron, junior Erin Joseph earned the win and junior Radara McHugh the save. Sophomore Kelly Ramsey hit a three-run home run, while Semmes was 3-for-3 with a double. Klesaris went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Against ECU, Anter opened the game with a two-run home run in the first inning. Klesaris was 2-for-3 with a double and freshman Quinn Porter went 2-for-3 with an RBI. McHugh pitched the win, striking out 13.
The Tar Heels, 25-10 on the season, return to action Thursday when they travel to Furman for a doubleheader. Game time is 2 p.m.
