RALEIGH, N.C. -- The UNC softball team ran its season record to 10-0 Sunday morning before suffering its first loss of 2000 on Sunday afternoon in the Triangle Classic championship. The Tar Heels, who had gone six consecutive games without giving up a run, fell 4-1 to Alabama in the title game.
Both teams scored in the first inning, UNC on an RBI single by junior Beth Olen, but the Crimson Tide added three runs in the third, on an error, a single and a sacrifice bunt.
In the first game of the day, North Carolina defeated East Carolina 5-0 to advance to the championship of its own tournament. UNC junior Carrie Bates homered twice against the Pirates.
Bates, who also hit a home run Saturday night against UNC-Greensboro, and sophomore Natalie Anter both earned spots on the all-tournament team.
The Tar Heels, who are outscoring opponents 62-8, travel to Lafayette, La., this weekend. They'll play Friday through Sunday in the Louisiana Classics tournament, where they'll face Florida A&M, Michigan State and host Louisiana-Lafayette.
