LOUISVILLE, Ky – Carolina softball had four student-athletes earn NFCA All-Region honors. Emily LeGette and Sanaa Thompson picked up first team honors, Lexie Roberts was tabbed for the second team, and Shelby Barbee landed on the third team.
Â
This is the first time in program history that Carolina earned four honorees in back-to-back seasons and the first time since 2008-09 with multiple first team selections in back-to-back seasons.
Â
LeGette's name is now littered throughout the record books. She finished with the most home runs (27), best slugging percentage (1.117), most total bases (153), most sacrifice flies (9), most home runs in a game (3), most total bases in a game (12), second most RBI (76), second best batting average (.467), second best on-base percentage (.573), and second most walks (46). Entering the year, the junior had 44 hits, six home runs, and 24 RBI in 58 career games before coming to Chapel Hill.
Â
Thompson, much like LeGette, has her name all over the record book. This is the junior's second all-region honor after landing on the second team last season. This year, she set the program record for runs (74), she also had the second most hits (84), third best batting average (.462), fourth best on-base percentage (.524), sixth most total bases (138), ninth best slugging percentage (.758). In career records she is also all over the record book. She currently has the best on-base percentage (.470), second best batting average (.404) and slugging percentage (.655), fourth most runs (158), sixth most sac-flies (8), and eighth most (135).
Â
Roberts earned her third career all-region selection and her second in Carolina blue. She earned third team All-Mid-Atlantic honors as a sophomore at Radford and then was third team All-South region last year. The senior went out with a bang, starting all 51 games, hitting .397 with a .476 on-base percentage. She sent the program record with 20 sac-bunts. She hit her first career home run this year sprinting around for an inside-the-parker against Bryant. She closes her career with the fourth best batting average in program history (.394) and fifth best on-base percentage (.458).
Â
Barbee held down the hot corner starting all 51 games, 50 of which were at third, one at shortstop. She clubbed a career-high 15 home runs which was the eighth most in program history. She had the fifth most RBI (62) making her and LeGette the first pair of teammates to eclipse the 60 RBI mark in the same season. She had the fifth best slugging percentage (.793), and 10th best on-base percentage (.481). She made a name by being willing to get on base by any means necessary as shown by her setting the program record by getting hit by a pitch 18 times. In just two seasons at UNC she finishes her career with the third most hit by pitches (28). This is Barbee's first ever all-region honor.
