Big Day For Humphrey Sisters As Women’s Lacrosse Tops Florida, 14-9

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ashley Humphrey and Chloe Humphrey combined for 14 points in the third-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team's 14-9 win over No. 5 Florida on Saturday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville during a top-5 matchup that did not disappoint.
Following the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 3-0 on the young season while the Gators drop to 2-1. UNC snapped UF's 17-game regular season home winning streak dating back to Feb. 28, 2023.
How It Happened
The third-ranked Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill to begin Atlantic Coast Conference action on Saturday, Feb. 22, against Syracuse. First draw is set for noon ET at Dorrance Field and will air on ACCNX. Tickets are available for purchase here.

How It Happened
- C. Humphrey netted the first two goals of the game in the opening four minutes before Florida cut its deficit in half with 9:44 on the clock.
- Carolina responded with two goals – both assisted by A. Humphrey – to end the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.
- C. Humphrey found herself with a first-half hat trick about 20 minutes in for the second game in a row.
- The Gators clawed back to get within one before Kate Levy and C. Humphrey notched back-to-back goals down the final stretch to give the Tar Heels a 7-4 lead at break.
- Both sides fired off 14 shots in the first half with UNC holding a slight 11-9 edge in shots on target. Goalie Betty Nelson had five first-half saves, including four in the second quarter.
- The home team tallied the first goal of the second half to keep it within two but UNC responded with a 4-1 throughout the third quarter.
- Marissa White, C. Humphrey and A. Humphrey scored the final three goals of the third frame with the latter Humphrey picking up two more assists, good for an 11-6 UNC lead after 45 minutes.
- UNC and UF both had three goals in the final quarter but Carolina's stalwart defense denied anything more than a two-goal run.
- A. Humphrey punctuated a superb showing with the final two goals for the Tar Heels, marking a hat trick with two and a half minutes remaining as UNC stood strong for a 14-9 win.
- A. Humphrey finished with a game-high nine points behind three goals and a game-leading six assists.
- C. Humphrey had five goals, the most among all players.
- Together, the two Humphrey sisters had eight of 14 goals, six of eight assists and 14 of 22 points. A. Humphrey assisted two of C. Humphrey's goals.
- Shots were fairly even throughout: UNC ended with a narrow 31-28 lead, including 22-17 on goal.
- Carolina had 11 caused turnovers to Florida's nine. Sam Forrest had a game-high four to set a new career high.
- UNC also won the ground ball battle, 20-14. Forrest and Ellie Traggio both had four ground balls to lead all players. Forrest's four were a career high and Traggio tied hers.
- Carolina also led in draw controls, 15-10, highlighted by Kaleigh Harden's game-high six.
- Nelson made eight saves between the pipes, the most in her career.
- The game's physicality was on full display as there were a combined 40 fouls and six yellow cards issued.
- Carolina extends its lead to 14-4 in the all-time series with Florida and remains perfect at 5-0 for games played in Gainesville.
- UNC avenged its early NCAA Tournament first-round loss at the hands of UF a season ago.
- The Tar Heels handed the Gators their first loss at home since May 14, 2023. They also snapped UF's 17-game regular season home winning streak.
- A. Humphrey's nine points are the most she has recorded in a Tar Heel uniform. Her six assists matched her best while at Carolina.
- C. Humphrey has tallied UNC's first goal in every contest thus far. She has now had a first-half hat trick in two straight games.
- Brooklyn Walker-Welch, one of the best defenders in the country, has scored in back-to-back games.
