Tar Heels Race Past Florida Into NCAA Final, 20-4
May 23, 2025 | Women's Lacrosse
FOXBOROUGH, MASS.— Top-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina trailed early but ripped off an 18-0 run in the final three quarters and rolled past fourth-seeded Florida, 20-4, into the NCAA championship game with a dominant semifinal win on Friday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
After the Gators led, 4-2, at the end of the first quarter, Carolina held the Gators scoreless for the final 45 minutes in one of its best performances of the season.
Chloe Humphrey scored a career-high seven goals on just nine shots to lead the way. Ashley Humphrey had four assists, Marissa White had three goals, Eliza Osburn and Addison Pattillo both had two goals and one assist and Caroline Godine added a goal and two assists.
"The reason that I can still continue to elevate my game is just the people around me, and they are just so awesome," Chloe Humphrey said. "It's so fun being a part of this team. But I definitely couldn't do it without them."
"We hadn't played since [last] Thursday, so it felt like a pretty long layoff, and we were trying to keep everyone sharp and together," head coach Jenny Levy said after the game to ESPNU. "I'm just really proud of them. They're a great group, they work hard, they love the game, they love each other, and we've got one more [game to go]. Congrats to Florida. That's the second time we've seen them [this season]. I know they're disappointed, but Mandy [UF head coach Amanda O'Leary] has done a great job with them."
UNC improved to 21-0 with the win and advanced to Sunday's NCAA final against No. 3 seed Northwestern, which came from behind to top second seed Boston College, 12-11, in Friday's second semifinal. Earlier this season, Carolina beat the Wildcats, 15-12, on March 27 in Evanston, Ill.
The Tar Heels will be making their sixth appearance in the national title game (2009-13-15-16-22-25) and first since completing an undefeated, national championship season in 2022.
Carolina is 36-12 in the last 17 NCAA Tournaments with three championships, six title game appearances and 11 semifinal trips in that span (since 2009). UNC has won 96 of its last 108 games (88.9 percent) and scored double-figure goals in 110 of its last 118 outings
Florida (20-3) saw its 17-game winning streak come to an end, losing to the Tar Heels for the second time this season. Carolina leads the all-time series with the Gators, 15-4.
"First off, congratulations to UNC," said O'Leary. "Phenomenal game. They played lights out. So really, just wishing them the very best moving forward. They, top to bottom, came out, had a solid game plan. We thought we had some options against them, but unfortunately we didn't. Again, congratulations to North Carolina and looking forward to seeing them play on Sunday."
Florida played well on defense in the first quarter and led, 4-2, before the Tar Heel tidal wave crashed all over the field. In the second period, Carolina took control. It outscored the Gators, 10-0, in the period with a 13-1 shot advantage while winning nine of 11 draws and dominating ground balls, 7-3. Chloe Humphrey scored four goals in the second and Osburn had two goals and an assist as UNC led, 12-4, at halftime.
Carolina also dominated the third quarter, 7-0, then essentially ran out the clock and added one more goal in the fourth for the final, 20-4, margin.
Ashley Humphrey's four assists gave her 117 points this season, setting a new UNC single-season record and breaking the previous mark of 113 set by Jamie Ortega in 2022. Sister Chloe Humphrey now has 86 goals in 2025, snapping Ortega's single-season program record of 82 set in 2021.
UNC's Betty Nelson played well in goal, blanking the Gators for the final three quarters to improve to 19-0 this season while making six saves. Carolina forced 16 Florida turnovers and dominated possession for the final three quarters.
"I walked into the Carolina lacrosse camp in sixth grade and my eyes were bright as can be," Chloe Humphrey said. "That's when I decided I wanted to win a national championship for the University of North Carolina, and that's driven my passion for the game for I don't know how many years, since sixth grade. To be here, I have to pinch myself today and to put on that performance we did today, I wouldn't want to do it with any other team and people around me. So we have one more game and we are going to give it everything that we have. This team, I'm telling you, has a lot to give."
