Carolina Falls to Notre Dame, Evens Up Weekend Series
March 24, 2018 | Softball
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Despite the Carolina leadoff batter reaching in every inning, Notre Dame capitalized on the Tar Heels' five miscues for the 9-1 win in six innings, evening up the series 1-1. Logging six hits apiece, Carolina and Notre Dame battled through 40-degree temperatures and 20 mile-per-hour winds throughout Saturday afternoon's game.
Â
Both Leah Murray and Kiani Ramsey logged two hits with Sierra Parkinson and Kristina Burkhardt each tallying one. Kiani Ramsey scored the lone Carolina run on wild pitch in the fourth inning. Melissa Rochford and Abby Sweet led Notre Dame's offense, driving in three and two runs, respectively. After game two of the series, the Tar Heels slide to 15-16 on the season, 5-3 in ACC play while the Fighting Irish improve to 20-9 on the year, 5-2 in conference.
Â
Murray and Burkhardt led off the game each with a single and stolen base in the first inning, but could not come around to score.
Â
Notre Dame took the only lead it would need in the first inning as Morgan Reed plated an RBI-double before Rochford doubled the score on single for a two-run edge after one inning.
Â
Reaching the bases on her second hit of the day, Ramsey made it home on a wild pitch to put the Tar Heels on the board. However, Notre Dame tacked on three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame for a 7-1 lead.
Â
Facing 24 batters, Kellyn Daly tossed 5.0 complete innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits. Hannah Nommensen tossed a 1-2-3 inning before a walk-off gone-ball by Brooks ended the game. Carolina's pitching staff gave up a mere three earned runs due to five Carolina errors throughout the contest. Daly took the loss while Notre Dame's Katie Beriont earned the win, giving up one earned run.
Â
Carolina and Notre Dame will play for the series win Sunday at 2 p.m. Fans unable to make it to Melissa Cook Stadium can watch live on ESPNU.
