Tar Heels Fall in Border Battle at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Despite a trio of leadoff hits, North Carolina was unable to overcome No. 24 South Carolina, falling 5-0 to the Gamecocks in Columbia, South Carolina on Tuesday. The Tar Heels even up their record to 5-5 while the Gamecocks improve to 10-1 on the season.
Sierra Parkinson and Destiny DeBerry led UNC at the plate, both going 2-for-3, while Leah Murray and Kiani Ramsey each logged a hit. Third baseman Berlynne Delamora stood out on the field with two quick grabs in the third and sixth innings. However, the Gamecocks were able to come through with the 5-0 decision.
South Carolina struck first, reaching base on a single before an RBI-hit-by-pitch for a one-run lead. The Gamecocks doubled their score in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Megan Boesel. The home team lengthened the lead in the sixth with a trio of runs. Krystan White singled through the left side for the first run before Jana Johns, who went 3-for-3 on the day with three RBI, plated two more on a double to the left-center wall
Murray, Parkinson and DeBerry each singled in the first five innings. The Tar Heels threatened in the sixth inning when Parkinson roped a leadoff double to left but the Gamecocks were able to make quick work of the inning. North Carolina fought to the end with a pair of singles by DeBerry and Ramsey in the top of the seventh, but a diving play the third baseman Jana Johns clinched the game.
Relief pitcher Katie Grace Olinger caught back-to-back batters looking in the fourth inning to escape a bases-loaded jam. Starting pitcher Hannah Nommensen tossed her first strikeout of the season, assisting two plays from the circle.
Nommensen hurled 3.1 innings, giving up one run in the first inning and one later in the fourth. Olinger tossed 2.0 innings of relief, allowing three runs and striking out two. Hannah Todd made her career debut to close the game for the final inning. Nommensen took the loss while South Carolina's Dixie Raley improved to 3-0
North Carolina continues its road trip at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Thursday through Saturday in Palm Springs, California. The Tar Heels' first opponent of the weekend is Arizona on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
