CORAL GABLES, FLA. - North Carolina continued its excellent play in the Atlantic Coast Conference as Coach Sam Paul's Tar Heels improved to 7-1 in the league with a 5-2 victory at 61st-ranked Miami.
Carolina won all three doubles matches and earned four singles wins to improve to 10-5 overall in the match played at the Neal Schiff Tennis Center on an 86 degree day.
It was Carolina's first victory at Miami since March 27, 2005 when the Tar Heels beat the Hurricanes 4-3 in Coral Gables.
Paul retooled his doubles lineup for Friday's match and it resulted in three decisive victories. The top team of Jose Hernandez and Joey Burkhardt, ranked 29th nationally, improved to 7-1 in ACC matches with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles. It was also Burkhardt's 20th overall doubles win of the season as he improved to 20-6. Seniors Brennan Boyajian and Cameron Ahari played doubles together for only the second time this season and they clinched the team point for UNC with an 8-4 win at #2. Paul teamed freshmen Esben Hess-Olesen and Oystein Steiro at #3 and they came through with an 8-5 win.
Senior Brennan Boyajian quickly put the Tar Heels up 2-0 with a win at #2 singles as he defeated Omar Aly 6-1, 6-4. Junior William Parker then won his 25th career dual match as he downed Victor Mauz 7-6, 6-3 at #5 singles, putting the Tar Heels on the brink of victory. Parker is now 7-1 in the ACC this year.
The Hurricanes bounced back with a straight sets win by Marco Stancati at #6 over Steiro to make the score 3-1. The team result would then be decided by a trio of contests that went to three sets. Senior Joey Burkhardt provided the clinching point as he improved to 6-2 in the ACC with a come-from-behind triumph over Diego Soto at #4 singles, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Hernandez, ranked 43rd, won a tough fought match at #1 singles as he outlasted Gabriel Flores in a third-set tiebreaker by a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 tally. Miami earned its second point as Wilfredo Gonzalez rallied to beat Hess-Olesen 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The 21st-ranked Tar Heels will continue their Florida swing on Sunday when they play at 26th-ranked Florida State at 12 noon. The Seminoles lost to seventh-ranked Duke 4-3 on Friday. FSU is now 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
