CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked UNC Tar Heels lost a tough match with the nation's best team on Friday afternoon.
The Ohio State Buckeyes lived up to their billing as the top-ranked team in college tennis, defeating Carolina 7-0.
Ohio State jumped out to an early lead by winning the first two doubles matches finished to clinch the team doubles point. Fifth-ranked Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman finished out doubles play with an 8-6 win, beating OSU's Matt Allare and Justin Kronauge.
The Buckeyes' lead was extended to two when Matt Allare opened up singles play with a straight sets win at the fifth spot. The nation's 38th-ranked player, Balazs Novak, then put Ohio State one win from clinching the match with a straight sets win of his own at the fourth singles slot. Top-ranked Bryan Koniecko followed through, winning 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 singles position to secure the win for Ohio State.
Despite the loss, the Tar Heels are still 5-2 on the season heading into four straight non-conference matches. The first two will be played as a doubleheader against Georgetown and Howard on Feb. 20, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
