CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the first time since the 1970 season, the Tar Heels have won the first 16 matches straight after Carolina avenged a 2006 loss over Miami Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. No. 6 North Carolina improved to 16-0 overall and 4-0 in ACC play, with the doubles point and five singles wins, all won in straight sets. Miami, the 35th ranked team, fell to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the ACC, after the 6-1 defeat.
Singles wins from Stefan Hardy, Karl Wishart and Sebastian Guejman secured the victory for the Tar Heels. At the three seed, Hardy, a freshman native of Santa Maria, Calif., made a quick fix over Vivek Subramanian, 6-1, 6-3. Wishart, a junior from Baden-Baden, Germany, took his opponent, Barnabas Carrega, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to push the score to 3-0, North Carolina advantage.
For the sixth time this season, lone senior Sebastian Guejman, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, clinched the match for the Tar Heels. Guejman's quick 6-1, 6-3 defeat over Hector Nieto improved Guejman to a 14-3 record on the season and an impressive 10-1 record in dual match play.
Following soon behind, freshman Chris Kearney ousted Josh Cohen at the two seed, 6-4, 6-4, in a hard fought match. Kearney remained undefeated in dual match action; he posts a 14-0 record in dual action and 21-2 overall this season. Taylor Fogleman earned his 21st victory with a straight set win over JC Whitner at the five seed. At the one seed, junior No. 46 Benjamin Carlotti fell to No. 26 Luigi D'Agord in a tough tie-breaking battle.
North Carolina has not lost a doubles point yet this season and the point this afternoon was propelled by wins at the two and three seeds. Hardy and Guejman downed Carrega and Subramanian at the two seed, 8-3. Fogleman and Kearney clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Nieto and Whitner; the Tar Heel duo's record improved to 14-1 with the win.
Head Coach Sam Paul was extremely pleased with the team's effort today and on the season. "It was a good win," said Paul. "We are very proud of our guys; they fought hard and put forth great effort. We are especially proud of [Benjamin] Carlotti and how hard he fought today and the way he handled himself on the court."
Carolina played host to Miami this afternoon for the first time since the 1999 season. Last season, the Hurricanes upset No. 8 North Carolina with a 4-1 defeat. The loss today snapped a five match win streak Miami had going and marked only the tenth victory for North Carolina over Miami in 27 meetings. North Carolina has not opened up a season 16-0 since 1970 when the team went a perfect 18-0 on the season.
No. 6 North Carolina hosts the second ACC home match of the season welcoming Florida State to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start time.
