WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Sebastian Guejman's come-from-behind win at No. 4 singles clinched the match for No. 6 North Carolina as the Tar Heels defeated No. 7 Wake Forest in men's tennis action Wednesday at the Leighton Tennis Center. The win was Carolina's first at Wake Forest since 1995 as the Heels had lost in their last five trips to Winston-Salem. The win improved UNC to 3-0 in the ACC for the first time since the 2004 team started 6-0 in the league.
With the win, UNC remained undefeated in 2007, winning its first 15 matches for the second straight year. A year ago, the Heels went 15-0 before having the Demon Deacons hand Carolina its first loss of the 2006 campaign.
UNC is 15-0 overall now and 3-0 in the ACC. Carolina has won its first three road matches of an ACC season for the first time since 1996 when UNC was 4-0 on the road in conference matches. Wake Forest fell to 14-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
For the fourth time this season the Tar Heels turned to Sebastian Guejman to win the clinching point after he trailed by a break in the third set of a match. Guejman was also down a break in third sets against Rice, VCU and San Diego but rallied in all three of those cases to clinch the win for UNC.
Guejman trailed Andrew Hamar 5-3, 40-30 in the third set at No. 4 singles but saved a match point and ended up winning the last four games of the set to claim a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory. Guejman is 13-3 in singles action this season, 9-1 in dual matches.
UNC, which was ranked No. 6 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings on Tuesday, its highest-ever ranking in the history of the poll, also got singles victories from a pair of freshmen - Chris Kearney at No. 2 singles and Stefan Hardy at No, 3 singles. Both freshmen won in straight sets. Kearney remained undefeated in dual match play in singles at 13-0 this spring while Hardy bounced back from losses this past weekend at Georgia Tech and Clemson to score a crucial win for the Tar Heels. Hardy is now 12-3 in dual matches.
Kearney defeated Cory Parr 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 while Hardy downed Mariusz Adamski 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3. Wake Forest's two points in the match came with singles wins at No. 1 and No. 5 by Todd Paul and Taylor Fogleman, respectively.
UNC also won the doubles point for the 15th time this season in 15 matches, getting wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1, Lenny Gullan and David Stone upset Todd Paul and Mariusz Adamski 8-6. Paul and Adamski were ranked No. 25 nationally. Stefan Hardy and Sebastian Guejman won at No. 2 doubles 8-3 over Cory Parr and Charles Sartor.
The Tar Heels will return to Chapel Hill this weekend for the first time since March 4, hosting Miami at 3 p.m. Friday and Florida State at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The two matches will be the first ACC encounters the Heels have hosted in the 2007 season.
