
No. 24 Tar Heels Win League Opener In Men's Tennis

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 24th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis squad began the defense of the Atlantic Coast Conference co-regular season championship in won in 2004, by defeating the Maryland Terrapins 7-0 Saturday afternoon in an indoor match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels won all three doubles matches, two decided by close scores, and won all six singles matches, perservering to triumph in several competitive sets with the Terps.
North Carolina improved to 10-2 overall on the season while going to 1-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are currently on an eight-match winning streak. UNC will have little rest as No. 30-ranked Florida State (6-4 overall, 0-1 in the ACC) will visit Chapel Hill Sunday for a 1 p.m. match to be played outdoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Carolina went ahead 1-0 in the match by claiming the doubles point against the Terrapins (4-3 overall, 0-2 in the ACC). Senior Jonathan Janda and junior Raian Luchici quickly dispatched freshman Michael Coleman and senior David Reichsfeld at the No. 3 spot 8-1 but the other matches went to the limit. UNC clinched the team point at the No. 1 spot where UNC senior Geoff Boyd and Tar Heel junior Brad Pomeroy, together the No. 17 doubles team in the nation, whipped senior Ian Bliss and senior Troy Demers 8-6. Carolina finished off doubles with a win at the No. 2 spot as well as the duo of freshman David Stone and sophomore Sebastian Guejman won the last three games in row to rally by sophomore Scott Fink and freshman Ben Graham, 9-7. The doubles win for Boyd and Pomeroy improved their record to 21-3 on the season.
UNC went on to sweep all six singles matches although several were close. Luchici was the first Tar Heel to finish as he scored a dominating 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bliss at the No. 1 spot. Luchici improved to 19-5 this year with the win. North Carolina increased its lead to 3-0 with a win at No. 5 singles by freshman Benjamin Carlotti as he downed freshman Josh Brauser of the Terps 6-4, 6-2. Carlotti improved to 19-5 on the season with the win.
Carolina got the clinching win at the No. 2 singles spot as Brad Pomeroy took a gritty 6-3, 6-4 victory over Troy Demers. Pomeroy has now won nine singles matches in a row to go to 15-5 this season. At the No. 4 spot, Tar Heel junior Derek Porter continued his outstanding play this campaign by beating David Reichsfeld 6-3, 6-4. Porter came back from being down 4-2 in the second set to win four games in a row to claim the match. Porter is now 15-5 in singles this season.
Geoff Boyd came from behind to score the next point for the Tar Heels as he outlasted Scott Fink at No. 3 singles 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Boyd trailed 4-1 in the third set but won three games in a row to tie the match, fell behind 5-4 and then won the next three games to clinch the win. UNC finished off the match Sebastian Guejman taking a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 decision over Michael Coleman. Guejman has won eight in a row and now is 9-1 on the season.
