CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's 30th-ranked men's tennis team ran its winning streak to four matches Sunday afternoon as the Tar Heels blanked the No. 68 Purdue Boilermakers 7-0 in an indoor encounter at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina (6-2 overall) showed its moxie as the Tar Heels gutted out wins in six competitive and close singles matches against their Big Ten foe, including three-set wins by junior Raian Luchici and sophomore Sebastian Guejman.
Luchici, No. 66 in the national rankings, wracked up his 50th career win in singles as he defeated the Boilermakers' Paul Rose, ranked 78th, at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. Luchici is now 50-24 in his career. Purdue (1-2 overall) seized the early momentum in the competition for the double point as the Boilermakers won at No. 2 with Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell defeating UNC's David Stone and Guejman, 8-5. The Tar Heels bounced back with a win at No. 1 where the No. 9 national team of Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy defeated Rose and David Robinson 8-6 to improve to 17-3 this year. Pomeroy and Boyd have been adept at winning close doubles matches this year as 13 of their 17 wins have come by either 9-8 or 8-6 scores. The doubles point was decided in UNC's favor at the No. 3 spot where senior Jonathan Janda combined with Luchici to beat Colin Foster and Scott Warner, 8-5.
In singles play, Boyd was the first to finish as he whipped Robinson 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot in the lineup to make it 2-0 in favor of UNC. Luchici then wrapped up his three-set win over Rose at No. 1 before Carolina junior Brad Pomeroy clinched the match for the Tar Heels at No. 2 as he outlasted Chatterjee, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Carolina went on to win the final three singles matches as well, gutting out tight wins in all three. At the No. 4 singles spot, junior Derek Porter beat Filip Koziell, 6-3, 7-6. The players exchanged service breaks in the final two games of the second set before Porter won the tiebreaker 7-4. At No. 5 singles, Tar Heel freshman Benjamin Carlotti exhibited his poise with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Colin Foster. UNC finished off the 7-0 win at the No. 6 spot as sophomore Sebastian Guejaman took a three-set win from Eric Hodgeman, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
UNC will have six days off before hosting Charlotte next Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Purdue's next action is next Sunday at Ball State at 12 noon.
