CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina won its fifth straight men's tennis match Saturday afternoon, defeating Charlotte 7-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels, who got five of their six singles win in straight sets, improved to 7-2 on the season while the 49ers fell to 4-4 on the campaign.
The match was highlighted by a matchup at No. 2 singles between UNC's Brad Pomeroy and Charlotte's Jonathan Clark, who were high school teammates at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, N.C. Playing against each other for the first time in college, Pomeroy claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory that provided the 24th-ranked Tar Heels with the clinching fourth point in the match. UNC's Raian Luchici, ranked No. 66 nationally, won his singles match at No. 1 over the 49ers Roy Sichel 6-2, 6-4 and Carolina also was the recipient of straight set singles wins at Nos. 4-6 from Derek Porter, Benjamin Carlotti and Sebastian Guejman.
Only at No. 3 did the match extend beyond the second set where UNC's Geoff Boyd matched up against the 49ers' Marlo Santoso. Boyd won the first set 6-4 and Santoso the second 7-5. They played a tiebreaker in lieu of the third set to decided the match and Boyd won an exhausting 26-point tiebreak, 14-12.
UNC also claimed the doubles point with triumphs at all three flights.
Carolina will take eight days off before returning to action for a non-conference doubleheader at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday, February 27. UNC will meet Gardner-Webb at 1 p.m. that day and Elon at 6 p.m.
