
No. 6 Virginia Holds Off No. 7 Carolina In Men's Lacrosse

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. ? Sixth-ranked Virginia broke a halftime tie with the first three goals of the second half and went on to beat seventh-ranked North Carolina 10-7 in men?s lacrosse action at Klockner Stadium Saturday afternoon. The loss prevented the Tar Heels from going undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time since 1992 as UNC fell to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. Virginia improved to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
Virginia outshot the Tar Heels 51-32 on the afternoon and Paul Spellman's 18-save performance in the goal kept UNC in the game until the end. After an early UNC lead of 2-1, John Christmas scored the first of his three goals for the Cavaliers with 4:49 left in the first quarter and the Tar Heels never led again.
A.J. Shannon and Matt Ward scored goals for Virginia before the quarter ended with UVA up by a 4-2 count. The Tar Heels fought back to tie the match at halftime as Carolina scored three goals to only one for the Wahoos int he second frame. Mike McCall's goal 1:34 before halftime made it 5-4 and then Steve Will scored an unassisted goal with one second left in the first half to tie the game at 5-5.
UNC, however, could not maintain its momentum in the second half. Christmas, Kyle Dixon and Joe Yevoli scored the first three goals of the second half to put Virginia up 8-5. Jed Prossner's goal, assited by Kyle ell, on an extra-man situation brought Carolina within 8-6 with 57 seconds left in the third quarter and then when Lance Zimmerman scored with 6:47 to play in the fourth quarter the Tar Heels had crept within 8-7.
ut helped by Tillman Johnson, who made five of his 14 saves in the final period, the Cavaliers held off the Tar Heels. Shannon scored his second goal of the game with 4:17 to play in the game and then Virginia iced in on an extra-man goal by Ward with 3:13 to play.
Carolina will look to end its two-match losing streak when the Tar Heels travel to play at No. 17 UMBC next Saturday at 1 p.m. Virginia is also on the road next week and will play at Duke. If the Cavaliers beat the Blue Devils there will be a three-way tie for first place in the ACC this year as UNC, Virginia and Maryland would all be 2-1. If Duke wins then UNC and Maryland are the co-champions at 2-1.
