CATONSVILLE, MD. ? Seventeenth-ranked UMBC outscored No. 8 North Carolina 6-4 in the second half Saturday afternoon to beat the Tar Heels in men's lacrosse before 2,360 fans at UMBC Stadium.
UMBC improved to 6-3 on the season while the Tar Heels dropped their third straight match and are now 5-5 on the season. All five of Carolina's losses this year have come by three goals or less.
UMBC senior midfielder Adam Shiley tied his career best with a game-high three goals, senior attackman Josh Gerber gave the Retrievers the lead for good with a pair of goals early in the fourthquarter, and senior netminder Tim Flanagan was solid, repelling 19 Tar Heel shots.
Shiley gave UMBC a short-lived 1-0 lead 1:39 into the game, but the Tar Heels scored the game's next four goals and held UMBC off the board for over 22 minutes before UMBC junior midfielder Franklin Berry scored at the 9:26 mark of the second quarter. Shiley narrowed the deficit to 4-3 with 1:19 to play until halftime, and the Retrievers really got the momentum when Berry's attempted feed inside bounded through a maze and players and behind UNC netminder Paul Spellman with eight seconds to play in the first half.
The Retrievers built an 8-6 lead on sophomore attackman Phil Grillo's score 58 seconds into the fourth quarter, but UNC scored twice in a 20 second span to tie the score at 8-8 at the 3:11 mark. Gerber, UMBC's leading scorer entering play, had been held off the board for the first three quarters, but he one-timed Shiley's feed from six yards out to give UMBC the lead for good at the 4:22 mark. Gerber added another score two minutes later, but the Tar Heels crept to within 9-8 on an extra-man goal by Bryant Will at the 9:28 mark.
After Flanagan stopped UNC's Lance Zimmerman on a potential game-tying goal with 2:57 to play, Grillo ripped a shot past Spellman to restore the two-goal advantage with 1:58 to play.
Shiley led the Retrievers with 3 goals and 1 assist, while Gerber, Grillo and Berry had two goals each for UMBC, and Kestermann added a goal and an assist. UNC sophomore attackman Mike McCall led his squad with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Prossner had a pair of goals for the Tar Heels. All of Flanagan's 19 saves came in the final 45 minutes, as UNC outshot UMBC, 45-31. Spellman made 12 saves for the Tar Heels.
The Retrievers have defeated UNC at home in 1999, 2001, and 2003 by a combined total of four goals. UMBC is now 10-3 in games decided by three goals or less in the last three seasons.
The Tar Heels will seek to end their three-match slide when Carolina plays in the ACC Tournament semifinals at the University of Virginia's Klockner Stadium next Friday night. The Tar Heels, 2-1 in the ACC, will find out their opponent on Monday when the ACC Office in Greensboro determines the seedings.
