ECU Takes Two From UNC Softball

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--East Carolina won both games of a softball doubleheader Monday afternoon against North Carolina at the UNC Softball Complex. The Pirates gave up just one run on the afternoon, winning 3-0 and 4-1 to improve to 35-23 on the season.
The games were the final ones at home this season for the Tar Heels (30-27), who travel to UNC Greensboro Tuesday for their last doubleheader of the regular season. ECU's next games are at Elon on Wednesday.
The first game was scoreless until the top of the seventh, when ECU brought home all three of its runs on three singles and three UNC errors. Senior shortstop Eva Herron reached first on a fielder's choice and stole second. With one out, freshman first baseman Kate Manuse reached first on a bunt single, but the putout try was overthrown and Herron scored on the error. Sophomore Dany'ele Hill pinch ran for Manuse and reached third on a single by junior Stacey Smith. Both Hill and Smith then scored on a UNC fielding error.
UNC had eight hits to ECU's seven, but the Tar Heels stranded nine runners. Junior righthander Nicole Bacon (20-14) earned the shutout win for the Pirates, walking one and striking out one. Senior Shannon Walsh (12-13) took the loss for UNC, allowing one earned run and striking out one.
In the second game, East Carolina pitcher Laurie Davidson took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh, when freshman third baseman Jessica Young got the Tar Heels' only hit, a double to right that brought home senior catcher Natalie Anter, who had reached on a walk. Davidson, a junior lefthander, struck out five to improve to 13-8.
East Carolina scored two runs in the top of the first on a home run by senior centerfielder Beth Bridger and added another in the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Amber Gill. The Pirates' fourth run came in the top of the fifth, when senior third baseman Angela Manzo walked then scored on a two-out triple by sophomore second baseman Kristen Johnson. ECU totaled six hits against UNC pitcher Brandi Griffin, a freshman lefthander who struck out four and walked one.
