Aiken Wins Consolation Championship at Southeastern Collegiate

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Ben Aiken from Chattanooga, Tenn. turned in a standout effort for the North Carolina men's tennis team Sunday afternoon as he won the consolation championship of the South Flight at the 2002 Southeastern Collegiate Invitational at Wake Forest University. Aiken was one of three Tar Heels to play in the tournament, joining senior Greg Archer and sophomore Jonathan Janda.
Aiken went 3-1 in the tournament, winning the consolation title of the South Flight. He lost his opening match in the tournament to Gary Kilduff of Winthrop by a 6-4, 6-3 score but then came back to win three successive matches to claim the consolation bracket prize.
Aiken posted wins over Scott Rutledge of UNC Greensboro 6-2. 6-4, J.R. Randall of West Virginia 6-4, 6-1 and Kyle Markham of West Virginia 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 to claim the consolation victory.
Janda went 1-3 in the tournament. He lost to Marc-Andre LaDaoucuer of UNC Greensboro 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in the opening round of play in the East Flight. Janda went 1-2 in consolation bracket play. He fell to Danilo Mendes of UNC Wilmington 6-3, 6-4, beat Doug Ornsby of Appalachian State 6-4, 6-1 and then was beaten by Rob Haywood of Davidson 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Archer also went 1-3 in singles play. He was beaten in the opening round of the North Flight by David Bere of Wake Forest 6-2, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, Archer defeated Bryan Stonestreet of Appalachian State 6-1, 6-3, lost 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6) to Michael Kwieklen of Appalachian State and lost 6-4, 7-6 to Santaigo Falla of Charleston Southern.
