Tar Heel Softball Tops Virginia, 7-3

RALEIGH, N.C.--The University of North Carolina softball team scored five runs in the first inning and never gave up its lead in winning 7-3 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Tar Heels improved to 35-17-1, while Virginia fell to 51-16.
Centerfielder Quinn Porter and right fielder Rosie Gustavson reached base on errors to lead off the game for the Tar Heels in the top of the first, and Porter scored on catcher Natalie Anter's RBI single. After third baseman Kelly Ramsey walked, Gustavson scored on an RBI single by Beth Olen. Designated player Carrie Bates then singled to center to bring in Lauren Looper, pinch running for Anter, and Ramsey. UNC got its fifth run when Olen scored on a fielder's choice.
Carolina added another run in the third when left fielder Emily Price walked and scored on a double by Porter. The Tar Heels pushed the score to 7-0 in the top of the fifth when Porter reached on a single and scored on a base hit by Anter. On the day, Porter was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Anter also chipped in two hits and two RBI. Olen had two hits while second baseman Dionne Streete went 2-for-3 at the plate. Bates accounted for two RBI.
UNC pitcher Radara McHugh, who struck out eight and improved to 21-10 with the win, took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning, when Virginia scored three runs. With one out, McHugh walked pitcher Erin Allinder and first baseman Hannah Owings. Next up was second baseman Jill Bumler with the Cavaliers' first hit, a single down the left field line. McHugh then walked left fielder Katie Weinberg, bringing home Allinder for Virginia's first run of the game. The Cavaliers scored two more fifth-inning runs on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Meaghan Young that brought home Owings, and a single by centerfielder Kelly McCabe that brought home Bumler.
Due to a threat of rain in the afternoon, Saturday's schedule has been moved up two hours. Virginia will meet Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. in the first game of the day. At 1 p.m., North Carolina will take on Florida State. At 3 p.m., Maryland will meet the winner of the Georgia Tech-Virginia game.

Maryland opened Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship play with a 1-0 win against fourth-seeded Georgia Tech Friday afternoon at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Maryland scored the game's only run in the top of the third, when centerfielder Michelle Burrell led off the inning with a single to left. She moved to second on a sacrifice by right fielder Annmarie Brown, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a single to left by cleanup hitter Kiesha Pickeral, the first baseman.
Amanda Bettker earned the win for Maryland to improve to 15-6 on the season. She struck out four and gave up just two hits, a single to left fielder Jennifer Biggers and a double to first baseman Erin Hawley.
The Terrapins had seven hits, all singles, against Georgia Tech freshman Erin Voeltz (12-17). Burrell went 2-for-4 and second baseman Jillian Callaway was 2-for-3.

Game 3: Florida State 2, Maryland 1, 11 innings
Seminole second baseman Brandi Stewart hit a home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the 11th inning Friday to give Florida State a 2-1 win over Maryland in Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship play at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Maryland scored first, in the top of the fifth, when third baseman Casey Leiter reached on a single, advanced to second after centerfielder Michelle Burrell drew a walk, reached third on a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Annmarie Brown and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Florida State tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Left fielder Monique Marier doubled to left and was replaced on second by pinch runner Skyla Cox. Cox reached third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Natalie Bennett and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by third baseman Staci Brandon.
The game lasted two hours and 42 minutes, stretching into four extra innings before Stewart's blast won it for Florida State.
