CLEMSON, S.C.-The 74th-rated University of North Carolina mens tennis team dropped a tough 5-2 match at 24th-ranked Clemson Saturday afternoon in action at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The win by the Tigers gave Clemson head coach Chuck Kriese his 500th career win.
Carolina earned its points at #1 and #2 singles as senior Michael Grass defeated Ryan Bauer 7-5, 6-2 at the top slot and junior Assaf Drori won over Pablo Bellagamba 7-5, 6-1 at the #2 spot. But the Tigers, who already had clinched the doubles point by sweeping all three pro-set matches, won the remaining singles matches, three of them in straight sets. UNC freshman Bjorn Rencken lost a tough three-set match at #5 singles to the Tigers Luis Garcia, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
The win by Clemson kept the Tigers undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference play this year at 5-0. Clemson has an 18-8 overall record. The Tar Heels fell under the .500 mark for the third time this season at 10-11 overall. UNC is now 2-3 in the ACC, having lost its last three league outings.
The Tar Heels will continue their road trip on Sunday, April 11 at 1 p.m. when Carolina plays at 64th-ranked Georgia Tech (10-6 overall, 3-2 in the ACC) at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
