CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina swept visiting South Florida in a softball doubleheader at Finley Field on Friday afternoon to improve to 34-18 on the season. South Florida, ranked No. 18 in the latest national poll, fell to 39-17.
"These two games are probably the biggest wins we've had in our program," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "We're thrilled to sweep a team like South Florida that's ranked in the top 20."
In Game 1, USF first baseman Amanda Whitesell put her team up 3-0 in the first inning with a bases-loaded triple. The Tar Heels answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, then exploded for four more in the fifth. Second baseman Stephanie Jurkowski led off the inning with a triple, and catcher Natalie Anter and left fielder Jen Klesaris both hit RBI singles. South Florida coach Ken Ericksen was ejected for arguing a call during that inning and sat out the rest of the afternoon's action.
In Game 2, UNC's Klesaris scored in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by third baseman Megan Smith. USF answered with a run in the fourth when third baseman Gina Georgegantas scored on centerfielder Janeen Sobush's single. Carolina got the winning run in the fifth, when Jurkowski reached on an error and scored on shortstop Michelle Semmes' RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Radara McHugh earned the first win, giving up five runs and striking out two. Erin Joseph, also a sophomore, gave up five hits and struck out seven to earn the second win.
"We did a lot of things well today," Papa said. "Our pitchers did an outstanding job. USF has a good hitting team and we did a good job of controlling their hitters."
The Tar Heels travel to play a doubleheader at Maryland on Sunday.
