Men's Soccer Shuts Out No. 2 Wake Forest, Advances To ACC Semifinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ahmad Al-Qaq's goal in the 16th minute and Andrew Cordes' six save showing helped lift the No. 7 North Carolina men's soccer program (9-3-5) over No. 2 Wake Forest (11-2-5), 1-0, Sunday in ACC Tournament quarterfinal action.
How It Happened
• In the 16th minute, Al-Qaq's strike from just outside the box snuck past Demon Deacons goalkeeper, giving Carolina the early 1-0 edge.
• With under 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, Cordes halted back-to-back Wake Forest shot attempts.
• Wake Forest nearly converted on a corner kick in the 58th frame, however Garrison Tubbs' header sailed just right.
• In the 68th, the Tar Heels nearly converted on a Martin Vician header attempt, however Wake Forest's Trace Alphin denied the try.
• Cordes continued his stellar night in goal for the Tar Heels in the 85th minute, denying another Demon Deacon header attempt following a corner.
Inside The Numbers
• The Tar Heels lead the all-time matchup with Wake Forest, 24-16-10, including 10-8-6 in Winston-Salem.
• Carolina improves to 28-27-7 all-time in the ACC Tournament.
• Cordes' six saves matched a career best for the third time of his career. His other six save showings came against Wake Forest on Oct. 14 and NC State last season.
• Cordes, Til Zinnhardt, Sam Williams, Charlie Harper, Matt Edwards and Amdrew Czech played the full 90 for Carolina.
• Carolina advances to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament for the 17th time in program history.
