Tar Heels Stay Perfect At Home With Indoor Win Over BC
April 5, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC men's tennis team remained perfect at home this season and earned its seventh Atlantic Coast Conference win of the spring Friday, beating Boston College 6-1 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The 11th-ranked Tar Heels improved to 15-4 (7-2 ACC) with the victory, which came on the indoor courts due to rainy weather that drenched Chapel Hill all day.
UNC has just one home match left in the regular season, Sunday at noon against Notre Dame. The Tar Heels will honor their lone senior, Blaine Boyden, in Senior Day ceremonies right after the doubles point.
Friday against the Eagles, who fell to 6-13 (0-10 ACC), Carolina started strong with a decisive doubles win on Court 1, where Boyden and junior William Blumberg took the first five points and ultimately won 6-1. On Court 3, juniors Josh Peck and Simon Soendergaard teamed for a 6-3 win to take the point.
In singles, freshman Brian Cernoch won first, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Court 3. Soendergaard then won 6-3, 6-3 on Court 5 to make the team score 3-1.
The clinching point came from Peck, who won 6-2, 6-2 on Court 2. It was the highest he has played during his UNC career, which has seen him play in the third through sixth spots.
UNC and BC elected to play out all of the singles matches, even though the team victory had been decided. On Court 1, Tar Heel sophomore Benjamin Sigouin battled to 7-5 win in the first set and then had an easier time with the second, taking it 6-1 for the top-spot win.
BC's only win came on Court 6, where Carolina junior Ladd Harrison stepped into the lineup for just the second time this season and made the first ACC appearance of his career. He fell 6-4 in the first set and the second went into a tiebreaker. Harrison fought back from a 6-2 deficit but BC's Wills Tutecky ultimately won it 7-5 to take the match, 6-4, 7-6(5).
Moments later, Boyden wrapped up a victory on Court 4 for UNC's sixth point. The senior captain won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-5, and took the second 6-2.
