CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina men's tennis team opened NCAA Tournament play Saturday afternoon with an emphatic 4-0 first-round win over Campbell. On their home courts at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, the sixth-ranked Tar Heels fought their way to the doubles point then breezed through three singles matches to clinch the shutout.
Carolina (24-5) hosts No. 20 Tennessee Sunday at 10 a.m. for an NCAA second round match, with the winner earning a spot in the Round of 16 next weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. The match was originally set for 2 p.m. but has been moved up due to the forecast of extremely hot temperatures. For ticket info, click here.
Saturday's match was UNC's second of the season against the Camels. The teams met in January on the indoor courts at Cone-Kenfield, with the hosts winning 7-0. This time it was outdoors, in temperatures that topped 90 degrees by the match's end.
Campbell made UNC work for the doubles point, with the Tar Heels eventually claiming it with 6-4 wins on courts 1 and 3. In singles, sophomore William Blumberg was the first to wrap up his match, taking just about an hour to craft a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lorenz Schwab on Court 1.
Leading 2-0, the Tar Heels played on for 10 more minutes until they got singles wins within seconds of each other to seal the victory. On Court 3, sophomore Simon Soendergaard won is first set 6-1 and then led 5-2 in the second, seemingly about to lock up the Tar Heels' second point. But Campbell's Ondrej Labik battled back to make it 5-4 before Soendergaard could lock up the 6-4 win.
Moments later on the lower bank of courts, junior Blaine Boyden polished off a 6-0 second set on Court 4 to beat CU's Lukas Schaefer and send the Tar Heels on to the next round.
While the Camels were making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, UNC is in the field for the 23rd time in coach Sam Paul's 25 seasons as head coach. The Tar Heels are playing Sunday to earn a Sweet 16 spot for the fifth year in a row.
